“But why?” I asked.

I looked down at the road below me. The humans in their machines passed like an overflowing river. My talons gripped the line that stretched above the road.

“Who cares why?” my brother asked. “See any roadkill?”

His feathers were a darker shade of black compared to mine. He turned his head this way and that, searching, always searching.

“I care why. I’m curious,” I said. “Why do the machines move so fast? Why do the humans get inside?”

My brother cawed. He does that when he’s annoyed.

“We need to be first to the corpse, if there is one,” he said simply.

I looked at the lights at the intersection of the roads.
