Opening an umbrella under the sun is uncommon these days, but Stephen did so without exception. He would exit his building and, within a moment, ensure his face was in the shade of the contraption.

He didn’t much care. He didn’t look at his phone when walking down Yonge Street, preferring to peer across streets and sidewalks through narrowed eyes. From his perspective, the difficulty was maintaining an umbrella’s angle while riding a bicycle.
